You have decided to start your own online business and now you need a domain name? You need to start advertising and getting potential customers to your site. Imagine being able to run your business 24 hours a day 7 days a week and never leave your house to do so. Running an online business can be very rewarding and profitable for you.

Selecting the right name for your website is one of the more important step you will take when starting your own business.

Your domain name represents you and your business. Don’t mislead your potential customers by advertising something that you don’t sell just to get them into your store. This will lead to unnecessary trouble you don’t need.

When choosing your domain name you should consider what services or products your planning on offering and try working that into your domain name. Determine what group or groups your products would most benefit. Age, ethnicity, etc.

Although some domain names have no ‘product’ indication included, such as hp.com or coke.com or pepsi.com, they are so well branded that we automatically know their products or services.

Most people looking for Internet products or services search for something specific. For example, if your domain name is “Pens R Us” chances are your customers know you are selling pens. This is an example of how you work your business service or product into your domain name.

If you are selling pens and you choose a domain name such as “Office Products”, this is more general and you may not attract the potential customers you would have attracted if you had used “Pens R Us”.

Try to be as specific as possible with your domain name. Your domain name sometimes says it all and it’s what someone first sees when searching for something online. Choose a name that is important to your business.

There was a time when short domain names such as those mentioned earlier in this article were desired. In todays Internet world longer domain names are not a problem, so long as they are descriptive and easy to remember. Keep this in mind when trying to define your domain name.

The domain name can tell people what you have to offer and help them decide if they are interested in looking further. There are several ways you can select your domain name to bring in your customers. If you are starting your first website you may feel overwhelmed by the many choices available to you. Make yourself a list to help you get started.

If you need help determining your domain name enlist the aid of your friends and see what they come up with. Chances are if they like a domain, your customers will too.
